Otello, Verdi’s late masterpiece after Shakespeare, came to the 73rd Ljubljana Festival in the production of SNG Maribor Opera and Ballet. The performance opens in storm and public spectacle, then tightens into an intimate tragedy of jealousy, manipulation and irreversible violence.

Guy Montavon’s staging places the drama in a stark visual world where power, suspicion and isolation gradually close around Otello and Desdemona. Under the baton of Roberto Gianola, Verdi’s score moves between the force of the crowd and the fragile private moments in which the tragedy becomes unavoidable.

Performance: 8 September 2025, Cankarjev dom, 73rd Ljubljana Festival.
