In Manon Lescaut, Giacomo Puccini’s first great operatic triumph is shaped as a story of desire, vanity and ruin. In the Ljubljana production by SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana, director Manfred Schweigkofler follows Manon’s transformation through a richly visual world: from dazzling social display to the stripped, lonely landscape of the final act.
The production, conducted by Ayrton Desimpelaere, brings Puccini’s restless lyricism into dialogue with Walter Schütze’s scenography, Mateja Benedetti’s costumes and Lukas Zuschlag’s choreography, creating a stage language in which glamour gradually gives way to exile, memory and loss.
