Khatia Buniatishvili joined the Berliner Symphoniker and conductor Gudni Emilsson for a sold-out evening at the 74th Ljubljana Festival. The Georgian-born pianist brought her distinctive intensity and interpretative freedom to Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, one of the great virtuoso works of the Romantic repertoire.
The concerto’s sweeping lyricism and dramatic exchanges between piano and orchestra gave way, after the interval, to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Its insistent rhythms and dance-like energy shifted the focus from the soloist to the full orchestral body. The photographs follow that arc through Buniatishvili’s concentrated physical presence, Emilsson’s precise gestures and the individual voices of the ensemble.
